Part 1
Read and take notes on the article ‘Facilitating management learning: developing critical reflection through reflective tools’ (Gray, 2007), which you will also find in your printed Reader. You can omit the sections headed: Storytelling; Reflective metaphors; Repertory grids; and Concept mapping.
As you read, make notes on the following questions:
- a.What distinctions does Gray draw between reflection and critical reflection?
- b.Thinking about the organisation you work for, or another organisation you know well, do you agree that there would be value in encouraging critical reflection there? Make a note of the reasons for your answer.
- c.Has your reading of this article suggested to you ways in which you could improve your own reflective practice, and if so, what are these?
Part 2
In Video 1.1 you will hear the views of a number of expert learning and development practitioners, consultants and coaches who are talking about how practice-based and experiential learning (learning from experience through reflective practice) can be used in development programmes. As you watch this, make notes about these questions:
- a.What points are made about the value of practice-based learning?
- b.What distinctions are drawn between practice-based and experiential learning?
